State of Metro Manila's Airwaves 2025: Beyond the Ratings

Metro Manila's radio scene is a vibrant, chaotic mix of sounds. It's not just the number of stations but fierce competition and diverse programming that create the noise. While ratings agencies like Kantar and Nielsen provide valuable insights into listening habits, exploring direct consumer sentiment offers a crucial perspective. What do listeners truly prefer when choosing just a few favorites? This question was sparked by a simple moment in my younger sister's car.

Her dashboard presets cap at six stations, prompting a thought: What if listeners had to constantly choose which stations to keep or drop in every possible combination, assuming equal transmission power? Which would emerge as the ultimate survivors?

That's exactly how my MaxDiff (Maximum Difference Scaling) survey was created.

What is MaxDiff and Why Use It?

Traditional polls often miss true preferences. Asking "Which is your favorite radio station?" yields superficial answers, ignoring real trade-offs. That's where MaxDiff excels.

Unlike simple polls, MaxDiff prompts participants to make direct trade-offs within sets of six stations, choosing the most and least preferred. This approach, widely used in marketing, closely mirrors real decision-making by forcing prioritization and revealing true preferences through active comparison.

A couple of weeks ago, I distributed MaxDiff surveys to fellow readers, asking which stations would survive if limited to six slots across all possible combinations of each band. The results offer a revealing glimpse into listener loyalty in Metro Manila.

The Scope of the Survey

  • AM Radio Stations Considered: 23 total

  • FM Radio Stations Considered: 25 total

  • Number of respondents: 17

  • Criteria: Popularity based on consistent listener preference across all matchups

  • Field dates: July 14-19, 2025

This survey isn't about overall reach like Kantar or Nielsen; it's about genuine emotional loyalty and perceived value from engaged listeners—what stations listeners truly want to keep, even amid tough choices.

Top 8 AM Radio Stations

8. DWIZ 882

DWIZ has remained a fierce news station since 1991. Its blunt, often uncompromising style attracts loyal "anti-mainstream" listeners, especially during weekday mornings. Its direct approach appeals to those seeking unvarnished commentary and diverse views.

Of course, for some people, they avoid DWIZ 882 not because Rey Langit is no longer there (he left in 2016) but because of the weekday morning programs, Karambola and Yes Yes Yo Topacio.

7. DWWW 774

Dubbed "newsic," DWWW 774 uniquely combines news and public affairs with a curated music selection (oldies). This innovative format appeals to listeners who want updates without the intensity of pure news stations, offering essential information alongside a pleasant listening experience that keeps it consistently popular.

6. Radyo Pilipinas-Radyo Publiko (DZRB) 738

As the government's primary official radio station, DZRB 738 occupies a unique position. Though it may not dominate commercial ratings, its role in delivering national news, public announcements, and official programming ensures a dedicated, distinct audience. Its preference in the MaxDiff survey indicates some listeners rely on it as a trustworthy source of information directly from government agencies, especially during critical national events (including calamities)

5. Radyo Veritas (DZRV) 846

Radyo Veritas 846, the sole religious station on this list, does not chase commercial trends. Its dedicated followers tune in for daily Masses, reflections, and social teachings. Its extensive CBCP news coverage solidifies its role as a vital spiritual guide for many.

4. DWAN 1206

IBC's revived AM station (since 2024) has steadily gained listener preference, reflecting renewed programming and strategic content focus. Managed by Marc Logan (yes, that TV Patrol funnyman correspondent), the full-service station is now in limbo because of the parent company's broadcast franchise The current lineup of the other obscured government-owned station is much packed on weekdays with some interesting programs like Overthoughts with Sam and Joe, Decades of Sound (a music show that is similar to 89 DMZ back in the '90s) and Hardball.

3. DZRH 666

DZRH 666, one of the Philippines’ oldest and most venerable AM stations, maintains deep listener loyalty. While nostalgia fuels its high ranking by connecting generations, its relevance also stems from sharp current affairs coverage (e.g., Dos Por Dos) and popular dramas like "Ilaw ng Tahanan," which keep it engaging for older audiences and surprisingly attract some Gen Z listeners rediscovering AM radio storytelling.

2. DZBB Super Radyo 594

DZBB 594 remains the go-to station for straightforward news and classic public service. Anchors like Arnold Clavio, Rowena Salvacion, Melo Del Prado, and Joel Reyes Zobel are trusted voices in Filipino homes. Despite the rise of digital media, listeners favor DZBB’s reliable, no-fuss reporting, ensuring its continued dominance as a credible, immediate news source.

1. DZMM Radyo Patrol 630

Though the brand revived last May after 5 years (though not in the same ownership arrangement), DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 is the face of AM radio, renowned for breaking news, in-depth analysis, and swift public service. Its iconic "Radyo Patrol" brand commands recognition and trust. With comprehensive coverage, experienced broadcasters, and on-the-ground reporting, it remains the top choice. Its blend of serious journalism and accessible engagement cements its position as the most preferred AM station.

Top 8 FM Radio Stations

FM radio in Metro Manila offers diverse genres, entertainment, and youth-focused content. This survey highlights stations that excel at engaging listeners beyond just music.

8. Home Radio 97.9 (DWQZ)

Home Radio 97.9's easy-listening format features a blend of classic and contemporary adult hits, creating a relaxed, familiar atmosphere. Its soothing vibe makes it a top choice for those seeking a laid-back background at home, in the office, or on the go, ensuring its steady presence at the top.

7. 96.3 Easy Rock

True to its name, 96.3 Easy Rock is a comfort zone for many. With its “less talk, more music” approach, it appeals to office workers, coffee shop patrons, and seniors who enjoy mellow, nostalgic tunes. A quiet achiever, it reliably offers a serene, predictable listening experience—a welcome escape from the noisy urban landscape.

This is also known as the favorite radio station of UV Express drivers.

6. 98.7 DZFE

98.7 DZFE (The Master's Touch) stands out as the Philippines' only classical music station. DZFE focuses on offering an enriching, sophisticated listening experience for a discerning listener, rather than mass appeal.

5. Mellow 94.7 BFM

Mellow 94.7 BFM stands out with a blend of soft rock, pop, and easy listening. Its consistent, gentle programming offers a calming backdrop, appreciated for its reliability. While it lacks high-energy tunes, its steady top 8 presence shows a strong listener preference for its soothing, dependable sound.

Since August 1, 2024, the station has been operated by Prage Management Corporation, owner of Abante and Bilyonaryo News Channel.

4. Magic 89.9

Home to the legendary "Boys Night Out," Magic 89.9’s cool-kid reputation remains strong. Its blend of witty, semi-adult humor, engaging lifestyle segments, and steady Top 40 hits ensures lasting relevance. Magic attracts both the "titos of Manila" and young pros, bridging generations with its trendy, entertaining vibe and popular music.

3. Wish 107.5

Wish 107.5's signature Wish Bus isn't just a gimmick—it's a global brand redefining live radio performances. With top-tier sound quality, an artist-first approach, and thriving YouTube tie-ins, it delivers live music to millions. Even infrequent FM listeners instinctively trust Wish FM, acknowledging its unique role and consistently high-quality content in the music scene.

2. 105.9 TRUE FM

105.9 TRUE FM has quickly become a strong contender by offering relevant news and public affairs. Its rise indicates it effectively meets the demand for information on a clearer traditional airwave band.

It is the current home of Ted Failon, DJ Chacha, Sen. Raffy Tulfo, the Babao couple and Bro. Jun Banaag, just to name a few.

1. Monster RX 93.1

In a landscape of shifting tastes and digital disruption, Monster RX 93.1 maintains its edge, reigning supreme in the FM category. It leads with a curated mix of international hits, trendy lifestyle content, and cosmopolitan flair. The Morning Rush with Chico and Hazel is an iconic fixture, a daily ritual for professionals and millennials, blending humor, current events, and listener interaction. RX 93.1 is more than a radio station; it's a cultural touchstone that consistently offers a vibrant, relevant listening experience, securing its status as the most preferred FM station in this MaxDiff survey.

Stations That Just Missed the Cut

The MaxDiff survey revealed strong contenders that, while popular, narrowly missed the top tier when listeners faced tough trade-offs. Their absence from the top 8 highlights intense competition in Metro Manila's radio market.

For AM, DZXL News 558 nearly made the list. Meanwhile, Abante Radyo 1494 was about a year old and it's understandable; their tabloid-style delivery commands loyal audiences, but has less universal appeal against the top stations.

On the FM band, Barangay LS 97.1 stood out as a notable near-miss. Despite being the #1 in traditional ratings (per Kantar or Nielsen), it ranked #19 in MaxDiff. This discrepancy reflects differences in measurement: while Barangay LS has broad reach and popularity through mass-appeal music and personalities (e.g., Papa Dudut), MaxDiff suggests listeners prioritize stations they perceive as offering a more distinct or deeply valued experience. Many tune in casually, but fewer see it as a "must-keep" station when choices are limited, highlighting the difference between casual familiarity and deep loyalty.

Another is Love Radio 90.7. While default #2 by marketing firms, they were #14 among 25 in the MaxDiff.

The Power of MaxDiff: Beyond Simple Popularity

This MaxDiff survey offers a sharper perspective on radio ratings, highlighting that “popularity” is multifaceted. A station may lead in reach but not necessarily be the most cherished when choices are tough.

Top-ranked stations are those that build emotional loyalty and offer value beyond entertainment, through credible news, spiritual content, unique music, or compelling personalities. These stations forge deep connections, earning a place on listeners’ limited presets and reflecting true influence in Metro Manila’s soundscape.

What do these results reveal about your listening habits? Do your “must-haves” align with our findings, or do you prefer stations that appeal to different preferences?

Returning to Blogger with Unfortunate Updates

Hello, Timow here. After 12 years, I find myself back on Blogger.  My old blog here was a mixed bag of memories—some good, some I'd rather forget—but here I am again, reviving this space for the time being. Unfortunately, this return isn’t entirely by choice. For these past three days, I’ve struggled to access my WordPress site (or others), even while logged in.  Here's the tracert test I conducted this afternoon. It’s frustrating.  My Jetpack app works fine on my smartphone, but my experience is frustrating! When I blog, I prefer working on it on a laptop and Chromebook over a smartphone. Typing on a phone just isn’t the same. You need to copy and paste the links. It's tedious. For now, Blogger will have to do until someone is paying attention to me. The next blog post on WordPress is scheduled to be on Monday. (I'll try to replicate that content here if the servers fail to respond.) ~Timow

Hits and Misses: 37th PMPC Star Awards for TV

WHEW.  The PMPC Star Awards for Television have been awarded. It’s that time when stars dress to the nines, networks rally behind their shows, and online fans on Facebook and Twitter show support for their idols.  Here, we just want to see if our predictions come true. (Don't worry, there's no real money involved in this patch, unlike those online gambling/casino sites that are sadly sponsored for the recent event.)  Honestly, making guesses beforehand is half the fun, but as I’ve learned over the years, the results can humble you. This catch-up edition's awards did exactly that. Some of their bets paid off, but others… well, let’s just say PMPC has a way of surprising us. So let’s sit down and go through the categories. I’ll share how the predictions stacked up, what truly happened, and my personal thoughts as I watched the results unfold. The Predictions vs. The Reality Here’s a breakdown of who won last Sunday and how accurate the predictions were. Program Winners BES...
